Winner of the Haute Luminaire Competition: Lamp design by Carson Smuts and Anja Zajaczkowska

The concept of this lamp originated from the peacock. The main aspects drawn from this concept were the lightness of feathers and the changing of their form from a compact slender figure to an extravagant display. The play of subtle colours in the feathers was incorporated into the design through the play of light.

The form of the lamp can be changed; from a compact form spotlight to a sculptural feature light. Each arm is evenly balanced on a pivot and is light to the touch; the user can easily sculpt the arms into multiple positions.

The Peacock is a standing wall lamp and uses the backlit wall as a lumier; shining a play of light onto the wall and reflecting the light back through the rings. The contrast of a neutral colour halo light next to warm spot lights creates an elegant play of light on the wall. The dark colour of the Peacock creates a silhouette.

The effect could be manipulated by the user allowing either a blue halo effect, warm spot light or both.* To achieve this three Luxeon I LED’s were used with lenses to focus the warm light. In contrast LED flex tape was used to create the blue halo effect.

The entire concept from the movement and the balancing of the arms to the powering of the light culminates at the centre pivot point, which is the heart of the light supporting the arms and allowing a light balanced movement while providing power to each moving arm simultaneously.

*For display purposes this function was omitted for the prototype.
